About
924 miles in 17 days completing 60 miles a day.
Alan has been a wheelchair user since 1998. He says he is no different from anyone else just because he has a disability and leads a very active life and keeping fit is a massive part of it. Having suffered from severe leg ulcers from the age of 11, his left leg had to be amputated in 1997, and his right leg amputated in 1998 due to leg ulcers and MRSA.
In 2000 he had to have a further operation on his right leg to amputate through his knee, as the stump would not heal. Since being in a wheelchair he started to put on a lot of weight so joined the gym at Scunthorpe Leisure centre. His strength improved and he even managed to lose some of the weight gained. For 2 years, after intense Physiotherapy, he learned to walk again but found it very difficult and experienced a lot of pain. Therefore, in 2002 he made the decision to spend time in his wheelchair and get on with life, as he had missed out on so much.
He has since raised thousands of pounds for several charities. Alan works at Scunthorpe General Hospital as a Ward Clerk and at Scunthorpe Leisure Centre helping to get disabled people active and into sport. Alan is seeking sponsors and has a Justgiving page at www.justgiving.com/alanrayment. Further details about Alan are available from his website at www.alanrayment.co.uk
