The anticipation builds as we approach the 2024 London Marathon

As the 2024 London Marathon approaches, the When You Wish Upon a Star team had the pleasure of catching up with Andy Talbot and Gavin Miller. They're both participating in the marathon to raise funds for When You Wish Upon a Star, a cause close to their hearts as their families have been recipients of wishes granted by our charity.

Here's what they shared with us in anticipation of the upcoming event:

Why did you choose to do the London marathon?

Gavin “Because It’s an achievement so I can say I’ve completed it and it’s an opportunity I may not do again and when you wish asked me If I’d like to run if a space became available.”

Andy “I chose the London Marathon because it’s iconic and something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Have you ever ran a marathon before?

Gavin “I did the Manchester marathon last year for when you wish so it’s my second one.”

Andy “I’ve ran two marathons before and love the challenge of long distance and seeing if I can better my PB.”

Why did you choose When you Wish Upon a Star to run for?

GavinWhen My Daughter Sofie was 3 she’s was seriously ill in Hospital for 8 months we didn’t know at the time if she was going to make it Wish Upon a star Granted Sofie’s wish to meet the Disney Princesses at Disneyland Paris.”

Andy “I chose When You Wish Upon a Star because it’s very close to our hearts and has helped us through some dark times with Harry’s health. When you have so much going on with your child who is ill Wish helps that haze go away just for a short while until your next hospital visit or operation. Now it’s time to give back and help create ever lasting memories not just for the ill child but also their family because everyone goes through it together.”

How’s your training going?

Gavin “My Training is going well despite me breaking my toe in December , so I’m hopefully back on track.”

Andy “The training is going great, I’ve done anther two half marathons this year and really can’t wait to start on the 21st as I had to defer my place last year due to injury.”

What are you looking forward to most about the day?

Gavin “I’m looking forward to the atmosphere and seeing the cheering crowds that will hopefully motivate me.”

Andy “I can’t wait to cross the finish line and see Sarah, Lily and Harry. They’ve followed me all over the country running for When You Wish Upon a Star from London to Newcastle and also taken part in plenty of fun runs and mini marathons along the way. My target was to complete 2300 miles training in a year, I’ve done that now. For Wish I’ve ran 6 half marathons in a year and 2 marathons once I complete London and it will bring all our fund raising to an end and what better way to finish than in London.”
