Over the period of the pandemic our staff have been, or will be, working reduced hours, on Furlough or working from home. As a result, response to any communications may not always be as timely as we would like, but we will get back to you. We thank you for your understanding with this.
With a book full of Wishes planned and waiting to be granted, plus more requests coming in every day, the whole team were filled with excitement, ready to make those Wishes come true and deliver a year full of fabulous events for our Wish families and wonderful supporters.
Unfortunately, Covid -19 put a sudden and unexpected halt to all those happy plans. Like many charities we had to cease our Wish granting activities when the country went into lockdown in March. The pandemic has had a huge impact on fundraising activity, and it continues to be a financially difficult time for charities, as it is for many other sectors. The ongoing impact for When You Wish Upon a Star is likely to be significant, and we are braced for longer-term austerity as the economy suffers.
Our priorities since the first lockdown ended have been to ensure our valuable team is safeguarded and to keep our Wish children at the forefront of our plans going forward. Our staff and supporters have been tremendously resilient and have continued to show the same passion and commitment to providing happy moments for our Wish children – we thank them for this.
Unfortunately, many of our Wishes involving foreign and domestic travel have had to be suspended due to Covid - 19 regulations and the necessary shielding precautions for our Wish children. We look forward to the day when we can get back to delivering those magical Wishes in safety.
Due to the ongoing impact of Covid - 19 and the sad fact so many Wish children have been forced to shield, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend taking on any new Wish requests as at 31 October 2020. This is heartbreaking for us – the Charity was set up by Barbara White OBE 30 years ago with the sole purpose of granting Wishes and giving our Wish children and their families the magical memories they deserve. Getting back to our usual activity will be our top priority once we are able.
In the meantime, our Wish team have been in contact with our current Wish families and continue to provide them with updates and alternative Wishes where possible. It has been a challenging period for these families, and sadly we have lost some of our beautiful Wish children during this difficult time.
Nothing matters to us more than our Wish children and their families. In order to continue our work, we have evolved our Wish offerings to include physical items and online/virtual experiences, where we can, as well as gift boxes to help celebrate our 30th birthday; plus so much more.
As we head toward Christmas, our wonderful fundraising team are embracing virtual events and fundraising initiatives; you can see all our current activity on our social media pages – please do get involved!
Our retail outlet, which was fully operational in accordance with Covid - 19 safe regulations and guidance since June, is now temporarily closed once more, due to the second lockdown. Our warehouse staff continue to work safely behind the scenes preparing for re-opening as we have an abundance of fantastic new stock to hit the shelves before Christmas and once the Government gives permission, our doors will be open once more. Keep checking our website and Facebook page for updates.
On a final note, we know that many people at home and across the world are facing many struggles at this difficult time. At When You Wish Upon a Star, we will continue to do all we possibly can, in a Covid - 19 safe way to ease the difficulties faced by our Wish children and their families. We are grateful to all our staff and supporters for helping us to fulfill this, our core purpose, even in the face of such adversity.
Stay safe and keep in touch.
