Emily in Paris

Despite being a huge fan of French culture Emily had never been to Paris, she decided to see the great sights of Paris while doing something amazing and run in the 2024 Paris Marathon to raise funds for When You Wish Upon a Star. The marathon route passes by numerous iconic landmarks and attractions in Paris, including the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Louvre Museum, and Champs-Élysées. Runners get to enjoy the scenic beauty of Paris while running along the picturesque River Seine and through charming neighbourhoods. The marathon finishes on Avenue Foch near the Arc de Triomphe, providing a grand and iconic backdrop for participants as they complete their 26.2-mile journey. After crossing the finish line, runners are treated to refreshments and have the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with fellow participants in the Race Village.

We caught up with Emily after her incredible Parisian journey:

What made you want to fundraise for When You Wish Upon a Star?

I chose to run for Wish because I think it's a fantastic charity that makes kids' dreams come true. I've seen the work they've done in videos and it really touches your heart to see the difference it makes to a child's life. I chose to run Paris marathon because I've never been to Paris before and I thought running a marathon there would be a great way to see the sights!

Tell us the highs and lows of getting ready for or taking part in this event?

Last year I ran Brighton marathon and the Cornish marathon, so this was my third marathon. I was so excited to run the marathon, I did 20 weeks of training including long runs on Sundays which took hours. I also got a little French tattoo on my arm with a little bread, because when I ran Brighton marathon last year, my favourite sign said "Pain is just 'bread' is French" and it's always stuck with me! On the actual day, right before the start line, I was already starting to get emotional that I had even made it there, and it turned out to be an amazing race with lots of support from the public. The race was not easy at all though, and my knee was really hurting, but I managed to get through it.

What was your favourite part of the day?

My favourite part of the day was probably when, in the middle of the race, I ran past a band who were playing one of my favourite Dire Straits songs - it's crazy how much your favourite songs can affect your mentality, it was like I was flying for that brief moment!

There is still time to support Emily’s Paris Marathon Fundraiser here.
