When You Wish Upon a Star welcomes Joe Williamson as incoming CEO

The Trustees are pleased to announce that on 23rd June 2025 When You Wish Upon a Star will be welcoming Joe Williamson as our new Chief Executive Officer.

Joe joins us after 7 years with the Sheffield United Community Foundation where he worked as Chief Operation Officer, being instrumental in the expansion of that charitable organisation. During his time there he has led a multi-disciplinary team, encouraging collaborative and partnership working, and raising its profile in Sheffield and beyond.

Joe has demonstrated that his strength is in successfully designing and executing fundraising strategies which have led to sustainable growth. As part of that, he has cultivated and maintained long-term relationships with donors, corporate partners and key stakeholders.

When You Wish Upon a Star, which is celebrating its 35th year, has just moved into a new modern Head Office in Nottingham from its original old home at Futurist House, so everyone in the team is excited about the future in which Joe will play an important part. The Trustees are certain that he will bring energy and enthusiasm to his new role and lead When You Wish Upon a Star in its development as the charity enters a new era; continuing to help sick children and their families make magical memories for many years to come.

It is both a tremendous honour and a privilege to be appointed into the role of Chief Executive Officer at When You Wish Upon a Star. For over three decades, this great charity has stood as a beacon of hope, love, and light - making dreams come true for children (and their families) living with life-threatening illnesses. I am so proud and excited to join an organisation with such a powerful legacy of compassion and impact.

As I take on this incredible responsibility, I do so with great respect for the work that has come before me, and with that, a clear vision for building upon it. I truly believe in the transformative power of making a wish come true. It’s not just about the magical experience – but restoring joy, strength, and belief in the impossible during the most challenging of times.

Together with our dedicated staff, supporters, volunteers, and partners, I am committed to growing our reach, strengthening our foundations, and ensuring that we grant as many wishes as possible moving forward. I look forward to leading When You Wish Upon a Star, with a new sense of inspiration, staying true to our values, and staying committed to the children and families we serve.
